Grace Willis
Grace Willis joined the BEC team in 2007 as an intern. As a volunteer biological survey assistant, Grace has performed population and diversity studies of small mammals and reptiles at the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge for the Nevada Department of Wildlife and of vernal pool amphibians for the DuPage County Forest Preserve, Wheaton College and A Rocha International. Species surveyed have included Montane Vole (Microtus montanus), Deer Mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), Chisel-toothed Kangaroo Rat (Dipodomys microps), and Western Harvest Mouse (Reithrodontomys megalotis) in the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and Blue-Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma laterale), Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma maculatum), Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum), Mudpuppy (Necturus maculosus), and Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) in the DuPage County Forest Preserve. As a member of the Student Conservation Association, Grace worked in Great Smoky Mountains National Park to raise a trail above the water table to prevent further habitat damage and soil erosion. The project included diversion of water and rehabilitation of natural habitat. Grace's responsibilities at BEC include project-specific research on wellhead protection, environmental health and safety regulations, remediation standards for former methamphetamine laboratories and renewable energy development projects in Nevada. |
