Public Safety Project Report and Coordination

Nye County, Nevada

BEC was contracted by the Nye County Nuclear Waste Repository Project Office to complete a public safety report. The report was to review the status of County public safety services and recommend whether the services could reasonably support U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) activities at the proposed Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository. The report included possible public safety impacts of the proposed repository on Nye County, potential benefits and liabilities of support, cooperation, and integration of required Nye County and DOE public safety activities.

BEC provided their findings to DOE in a draft report. After DOE’s comments were received and incorporated into the final report, BEC conducted outreach meetings with the local communities and stakeholders. Comments and concerns from these meetings were also incorporated in the final report, which was submitted to and accepted by Nye County and the DOE.
