Solid Waste Management Plan Update

Nye County, Nevada

BEC was subcontracted by MaryEllen Giampaoli, Environmental Compliance Specialist, on behalf of the Nye County Department of Public Works to complete the five-year Update for the County’s Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) as required by Nevada statutes. The SWMP provides a comprehensive overview of the solid waste management system for the County, including solid waste collection, landfill and storage bin facilities, recycling programs, and household hazardous waste programs. It serves to document the evolution of the County’s solid waste management system and to plan for the County’s future needs.

BEC was responsible for reviewing the County’s solid waste management system for compliance with local, State and Federal regulations and other County planning documents; identifying County, Federal, Tribal, and privately owned facilities within Nye County and reviewing their current operating status; conducting interviews with facility owners, operators, and contractors; calculating the average solid waste generation rate for the County and applying the rate to project future solid waste quantities based on increase in population; documenting the current recycling and household hazardous waste programs within the County; and identifying future planning needs for the County’s solid waste management system. Results were presented in the 2009 Solid Waste Management Plan Update which was submitted to the Nevada Division of Environmental protection for approval and the Nye County Board of Commissioners for adoption.
